Gavrilova beats Watson in Madrid tennis

Daria Gavrilova has beaten Heather Watson at the Madrid Open causing some issues for the Brit's Olympic qualification.

Australian Daria Gavrilova has dealt a double blow to British No.2 Heather Watson after beating her in the first round of the Madrid Open on Sunday.

The 23-year-old was broken twice in each set as she went down 7-5 6-4 to the world No.39.

Watson had lost to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the final round of qualifying but went through to the main draw as a lucky loser after Yulia Putintseva was ruled out due to illness.

Defeat was a blow for Watson, who is now set to lose the top 56 ranking she requires for Olympic qualification next week.
