With a love that spanned more than seven decades, Vivian Boyack and Alice "Nonie" Dubes, have finally tied the knot in an intimate wedding ceremony.
Boyack and Dubes sat next to each other in wheelchairs and held hands as they exchanged vows in First Christian Church, Davenport, US, the Quad-City Times reported.
"This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago," said Reverand Linda Hunsaker, who married the Iowa couple in front of their close friends and family.
Same-sex marriage was legalised in Iowa in 2009.
The pair met in their home town of Yale, before moving to Davenport in 1947 where Boyack worked as a teacher and Dubes in payroll.
"I always wanted to be a teacher,” Boyack said after the ceremony. "My plan at an early age was to teach in the school where I was then going, and my teacher would move on to another school."
Dubes worked for the Times and Democrat for 13 years in payroll. "I signed the paychecks for everybody, including Bill Wundram," she said.
The couple have travelled across all 50 US states, all the provinces of Canada, and to England twice.
“We’ve had a good time,” Dubes said.
The newlyweds said their 72 years together had its ups and downs, but believed it was never too late for a new chapter in life.
