Federal parliament will deal with the issue of marriage equality before voters return to the polls, cabinet member Christopher Pyne says.

"I think in our life time in this parliament it will be dealt with," he told the Nine Network on Friday.

Labor's Anthony Albanese says there should be a conscience vote across the parliament, and the issue would be settled quickly and leave everyone wondering what the fuss was all about.
