Gaze backs Kings' NBL depth, for now

Kings coach Andrew Gaze will look to give his rookie big men more burn when they aim to net their first win of the NBL season this weekend.

Sydney Kings coach Andrew Gaze has promised to give his big man rotation a few more NBL games before deciding whether to look for reinforcements.

The Kings' season got off to a disappointing start on Saturday when conceding a round-high 105 points against Adelaide despite giving up just three three-pointers.

Instead the damage was done on the inside, where Gaze started with the undersized front court pairing of 205-centimetre Perry Ellis and 200-centimetre Todd Blanchfield.

Gaze admitted he should've given more burn to the taller, yet inexperienced men in his squad, including rookies Isaac Humphries, Dane Pineau and Indian national captain Amritpal Singh.

"Isaac's a young man, only 19 years of age, who's going to be a superstar in our league but still got a lot to learn and he's going through that process," Gaze said on Wednesday.

"Dane's another one that in hindsight I should've played him a little bit more in the second half. He's one of our better defending bigs and he's very mobile.

"So in hindsight we erred in the judgements we made in that area.

"The other one is Singhy, who's been outstanding at practice. He could've got us a few more minutes as well.

"It's easier to justify minutes for others to get them more minutes, but then you say, 'Well who are you taking minutes away from'."

The Kings showed last year they were unafraid to bolster their squad early in the NBL campaign when they signed former NBA star Josh Powell after just one game.

However Gaze insists the club is in no rush to fill their vacant third import slot, which could be occupied when the current NBA pre-season comes to an end next week.

"Right now I like the balance of our team," he said.

"We've got some young guys there that are going to be great players. We've got to make sure they're up to speed to give us our chance to do what our goals are this season.

"That is to make the playoffs and contend for a title.

"If the evidence is such that it's going to require different personnel, then we've got that flexibility to look at it. But at this point in time, we haven't spoken about any other players."

The Kings fly out to face New Zealand on Friday before hosting Wollongong on Sunday.
