The athletes' village for next year's Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will play a key role in the Games' legacy to the city, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says.

The $550 million site was officially handed over to Games organisers on Monday, 184 days before the event starts in April 2018.

Ms Palaszczuk says the village site will become a "health and knowledge precinct" after the Games in a key part of the legacy aspect of the event.
