General Hurley to replace Marie Bashir as NSW governor

Premier Mike Baird has announced Defence Force chief General David Hurley as the new NSW governor.

The new NSW governor said it was a "great privilege and a great honour,” to be asked to the role.

“It is really something that I am very proud to announce. David has the respect of the nation for his service. We should be proud and lucky to have [secured] him,” said Mr Baird.

Marie Bashir will finish in her role as NSW governor on October 1 this year - a position she has held since March 2001.
