George Burgess says he's relishing his new role as the leader of the South Sydney forwards as he emerges from the shadows of older brother Sam.
Burgess was man of the match in the thrilling 34-26 win over the Sydney Roosters on Sunday and scored a try in addition to clocking up 148 metres and busting five tackles in a barnstorming display.
Although he was an integral member of the Rabbitohs' premiership-winning side last year, Clive Churchill Medal winner Sam was very much the focal point of the Rabbitohs pack.
His exit to rugby union in England along with Ben Te'o, who's playing the 15-man code in Ireland, cast doubts over the Rabbitohs' ability to replicate last year's heights.
But two hugely impressive displays against Brisbane in round one and coming from behind to beat the Roosters have dispelled any early notions of a premiership hangover from Michael Maguire's side.
"I think we have had to step up as a group and as a team," Burgess said.
"It isn't all about one player. Obviously I take it upon myself because I've played plenty of games and representative games with England to try and step into that role a bit more.
"In saying that, it's a natural progression and I don't really think hard about filling Sam's void.
"As you play more games, it's natural to become more of a leader especially when you gain more experience.
"It essentially becomes a thing you grow into too."
