German GP unlikely due to cost

A Formula One race in Germany this year looks increasingly unlikely as promoter Bernie Ecclestone is declining to reduce his fee.

Germany appears to be without a Formula One race for the first time in 55 years as neither of the country's two circuits has been able to make a deal with series promoter Bernie Ecclestone.

Nuerburgring pulled out on Thursday, following the decision earlier in the week by Hockenheim, after Ecclestone rejected requests to reduce the fee for staging the race.

"We have reached the decision that it makes no more sense to wait any longer for timing, organising and economic reasons," Nuerburgring spokesman Pietro Nuvoloni told dpa.

The circuits alternate in hosting the German race and it is Nuerburgring's turn in 2015.

Hockenheim officials had been ready to step in for the financially troubled Nuerburgring, but Hockenheimring boss Georg Sailer told Tuesday's Bild paper that they also no longer believe in a race as time has run out to organise it.

"We have no more hope that Formula One will be here. The time to stage a race here is over," he said.

Ecclestone had told Saturday's edition of Britain's Independent newspaper that "The German Grand Prix is dead at the moment."

Germany is the home of four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel of the Ferrari team and of carmakers Mercedes whose team won the 2014 constructors title and the drivers' crown from Lewis Hamilton ahead of German teammate Nico Rosberg.

German races have been suffering from dwindling attendance in recent years despite the success. The last year without a German GP was 1960.
