German town evacuated, WWII bomb found

Amost 200 unexploded bombs dropped by US forces during World War II have been found in the German town of Oranienburg since 1989.

German authorities have evacuated 12,000 people from the town of Oranienburg in order to defuse a 250-kilogram unexploded bomb dropped by US forces during World War II.

Oranienburg was heavily bombed by the Allies during World War II due to the presence of arms factories.

This is the 195th bomb to be found in Oranienburg since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Evacuation of the town north of Berlin, which is home to the concentration camp Sachsenhausen, began at 8am local time on Thursday and is expected to continue until midday.

A hospital, a retirement home, seven day care centres and nurseries, five schools and two train stations for local and regional trains are all located within a one-kilometre radius of the undetonated bomb.

The bomb squad said it suspected another three unexploded bombs were in the area.
