The Netherlands took a huge step towards the semi-finals of the men's hockey World Cup by exacting some revenge over neighbouring Germany on Friday.

The reigning women's world champions Argentina and the United States meanwhile both picked up comfortable victories.

The three-time men's world champions Netherlands knocked off Germany with Jeroen Hertzberger's goal in the 19th minute to remain undefeated in group B with three victories.

The win came in a rematch of the 2012 Olympic gold medal game, where Germany claimed the title with a 2-1 victory in London.

The Dutch top group B with nine points, while Argentina received three goals from Gonzalo Peillat - in the 44th, 51st and 63rd minutes - in a 3-0 blasting of previously perfect New Zealand.

Both Argentina and New Zealand have six points for second place with the top two teams advancing to the semi-finals.

The 2002 and 2006 world champions and 2010 finalists Germany are in serious danger of being eliminated, having collected just three points for fourth place - with losses to Argentina and Netherlands.

South Korea and South Africa both have one point after playing to a scoreless draw on Friday.

In the women's competition, Argentina and the United States notched their second victories to take control of group B.

Silvina D'Elia gave Argentina the lead over Germany after just four minutes, before Noel Barrionuevo (32nd) and Carla Rebecchi (45th) added goals in the South Americans' 3-0 win.

Argentina improved to two wins and one draw for seven points in the group, even with the US, who thrashed China 5-0 as Katie O'Donnell scored three goals for the Americans' second win.

Argentina and the US played to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday.

Germany and China both have 1-1-1 records for four points as they hope to still catch the leading duo.

South Africa won their first game - and points - of the World Cup with a 4-1 blasting of three-loss England.
