Germany new year assault cases rises

Some 379 women have now come forward with complaints following a mass incident of sexual assaults and thefts in Germany on New Year's Eve.

The number of women coming forward with assault allegations after a night of sex attacks and thefts in Cologne has risen to 379, a police statement says.

Around 40 per cent of the cases are based on charges of sexual assault and a vast majority of the perpetrators are said to have been of North African origin.

The police have yet to assess whether the complaints amount to criminal charges.

The previous number of cases filed in relation to the New Year's Eve attacks was around 170.
