Sabine Lisicki defeated defending champion Flavia Pennetta 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-4) on Thursday to reach the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters.
The 24th seeded German Lisicki will next face former winner Jelena Jankovic.
Serbia's Jankovic advanced to the semis with a win over qualifier Lesia Tsurenko, who retired in the second set with an injury.
Former winner Jankovic, who is seeded 18th, was leading 6-1 4-1 when Tsurenko packed it in after 45 minutes on centre court with a right ankle injury.
"It's never nice to end a match that way," said world No.21 Jankovic.
In 2010, Jankovic defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the final but has only won one tournament since in 2013 in Bogota.
