Gerrans' horror run of luck on the bike

Australian cyclist Simon Gerrans' exit from the Tour de France after a huge pile-up continues a wretched run of luck for the Orica-GreenEDGE star.

CYCLING STAR SIMON GERRANS HAS HAD SIX CRASHES SINCE LAST DECEMBER:

November 21, 2014: Gerrans is honoured for a stellar season by winning the "Oppy" medal as Australian cyclist of the year

December 21: Gerrans crashes while training on his mountain bike, breaking his left collarbone. It means he does not defend his titles at the January national road championships and Tour Down Under

March 7: Crashes at the Strade Bianche in Italy - his first race of the season - and suffers an elbow fracture

April 5 - back racing again

April 26 - crashes twice at the Liege-Bastogne-Liege classic, where he is the defending champion, and does not finish

May - Gerrans' fortunes appear to be changing when Orica-GreenEDGE make a strong start to the Giro d'Italia. His interrupted season means Gerrans is racing the Giro for the first time in nine years.

May 21 - Pulls out of the Giro after crashing during stage 12

July 6 - Out of the Tour de France with a broken wrist after being caught in the mass pile-up during stage three.
