Gerrans to spearhead Spain assault

Tour de France stage winner Simon Gerrans will lead GreenEDGE at the Tour of Spain as the Australian team targets stage wins in the year's last grand tour.

Fresh from a breakthrough Tour de France Orica-GreenEDGE will target stage wins in the year's final grand tour after naming a nine-man team for the Vuelta a Espana.

On just their second Tour, the Australian outfit enjoyed their maiden stage win at La Grande Boucle on the third stage from from Ajaccio to Calvi as Simon Gerrans pipped Peter Sagan.

Gerrans then secured the yellow jersey courtesy of a blitzing team time trial on the next stage and GreenEDGE spent several days in the coveted maillot jaune before it was claimed by eventual champion Chris Froome.

However the shine of the performance was taken off by team leader Stuart O'Grady's post-race doping admission.

But sport director Neil Stephens said GreenEDGE will go into the Tour of Spain high on confidence.

"We've put together a dynamic team that will target stage wins in Spain," Stephens said.

"Our objectives are very much like last year. Many of the stages suit our style of racing and were capable of doing very well here.

"This is a group that is capable of pulling off a stage win on a number of different days.

"We have guys for the sprints, guys for the punchy little uphill finishes, guys that can win from a break and guys eager to help out all three groups.

"We won one stage and the mountain classification jersey last year with Simon Clarke.

"We hope to leave our mark on the race again this year."

Gerrans will spearhead GreenEDGE's assault in Spain alongside Clarke, Michael Matthews, Leigh Howard, Mitch Docker, Baden Cooke, Christian Meier, Sam Bewley and Wesley Sulzberger.

The Vuelta a Espana begins on August 24 with the team time trial from Vilanova de Arousa to Sanxenxo.
