Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove received a tip-off about Prince Philip's retirement from public duties hours before it was publicly announced.

Sir Peter's official secretary Mark Fraser told a Senate committee on Monday he received "informal advice" by text message from Buckingham Palace "two or three hours" before the announcement earlier this month.

The advice was conveyed to Sir Peter, he said.
