Gibbs and North overlooked by Scorchers

The Perth Scorchers hope they won't encounter any off-field problems when they travel to India for this year's T20 Champions League tournament.

The Perth Scorchers have overlooked former skipper Marcus North and South African opener Herschelle Gibbs for next month's Champions League Twenty20 tournament in India.

Gibbs starred in his first BBL season at the Scorchers, but failed to repeat the effort last summer, while North was dropped after a forgettable 12 months.

North relinquished the state captaincy following last year's disastrous T20 tour of South Africa.

The former Test batsman then suffered more pain when he was dropped back to grade ranks during the Sheffield Shield season after a series of low scores.

Simon Katich will captain the 15-man Scorchers squad, with veteran spinner Brad Hogg also named.

Young spinner Ashton Agar resumes his place in the team after making his Test debut during the recent Ashes series, while South African paceman Alfonso Thomas rejoins the squad.

The Scorchers couldn't consider all-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile and star veteran Mike Hussey, who were selected by their respective IPL franchises Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

Paceman Pat Cummins was also unavailable for selection following his recent back injury.

The Scorchers failed to make it past the group stage of last year's T20 Champions League tournament.

But more worrying was the off-field behaviour, with most of the team coming under scrutiny following a late-night drinking session to celebrate Mitch Marsh's 21st birthday.

"What happened in South Africa last year was disappointing, but the silver lining was a really brutal self-assessment and we're proud of how far we've come in the past 12 months," cricket operations manager Ben Oliver said.

"We have learnt from the experience, moved on and are now firmly focused on the opportunities in front us."

The Scorchers will fly to Darwin next week in a bid to acclimatise to the conditions they expect to confront in India.

Perth Scorchers squad: Ashton Agar, Michael Beer, Jason Behrendorff, Burt Cockley, Liam Davis, Brad Hogg, Simon Katich , Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Joel Paris, Alfonso Thomas, Tom Triffitt, Ashton Turner, Adam Voges, Sam Whiteman.
