Kurt Gidley kicked a late penalty goal for the second week in a row to earn Warrington a 20-18 victory over Widnes and a spot in the Challenge Cup semi-finals.
A week after his goal earned the Wolves two precious Super League points at the expense of Catalans Dragons, the veteran Australian kept his nerve to help his side close out a tense quarter-final at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday night.
Warrington, who were Wembley winners three times in four years up to 2012, were not at their best but they showed tremendous character to hold off their spirited visitors.
Warrington scored tries through Kevin Penny, Jack Hughes and Brad Dwyer but were indebted to Gidley's second penalty seven minutes from the end as they sealed a fifth successive semi-final appearance.
"We're not silky smooth at the moment and we're probably taking a few more penalties than we normally would," said Wolves coach Tony Smith. "We thought points on the board would be the right way to go.
"The game had a bit of everything and kept people on the edge of their seats. We weren't quite at our best by any means, but I'd put a lot of that down to Widnes. They came here for a game and we knew they would.
