The fifth day of the Australian Open of Surfing was one for the giant killers as Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Carissa Moore were all eliminated at Sydney's Manly beach.

The biggest shock of the day was undoubtedly Gilmore's defeat at the hands of fellow Australian Laura Enever.

The six-time tour Champion posted a respectable score of 11.17 but Enever surged into the quarter-finals by posting a skilful 15.80, the highest score of the day.

Fitzgibbons finished her heat with a two-wave score of just 3.73, handing victory to Hawaiian Malia Manuel by a healthy margin of 8.60.

It was a day to forget for Fitzgibbons, who struggled to gain any momentum or rhythm.

Moore, who finished third on tour last season, was defeated by Australian underdog Nikki van Dijk in Heat 7.

Van Dijk will take on American Sage Erickson in the quarter-finals.

Tyler Wright managed to avoid the issues that plagued many of the other stars, triumphing in an enthralling Heat against Coco Ho.

2014 tour runner-up, Wright is now favourite to take the title.

The men's competition also saw some high profile departures as Mick Fanning crashed to defeat against Tahitian young gun Mateia Hiquily.

Hiquily rode well for his 14.60 but Fanning failed to find his best form, scoring just 9.33.

Adrian Buchan failed to replicate Saturday's form and was eliminated by fellow Australian Stu Kennedy.

Buchan, who top-scored yesterday, posted just 5.24 as Kennedy cruised to a quarter-final match-up with Frederick Patacchia.

American Kolohe Andino showed the best form of the day in his entertaining win over Jack Freestone.

On any other day Freestone's 16.83 might have been enough to secure passage to the final day but Andino showcased all his skill and put up an imposing 17.20.
