Stephanie Gilmore's injury-hit season drags on, the Australian ruling herself out of the next event on the World Surf League tour in the United States.

The six-time and reigning world champion hasn't competed since injuring her knee in a free surf during a lay day at the Margaret River Pro in Western Australia in April.

She was forced to then miss the Rio Pro and Fiji Pro, effectively ending her hopes of defending her world crown.

Gilmore hoped to return for the US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach in California starting on Monday, but wrote on Twitter that she's not ready to return from injury.

"I don't want to perform for you guys if I'm not at 100% so I'm out of the USopen this time. No stress! Lowers, here we come!" Gilmore tweeted on Saturday.

Gilmore's next chance to get back to top-tier competitive action will be at Lower Trestles, 50km south from Huntington Beach, from September 9 where she will be defending her title.
