A teenage girl has been charged over the alleged stabbing of an older student at a north Adelaide school.

The injured girl, who is in year 12 at St Dominic's Priory College, suffered a stab wound to her shoulder in the attack on Wednesday afternoon and was taken to the Women's and Children's Hospital for treatment.

Police said the alleged stabbing occurred in a school bathroom.

A 14-year-old girl has now been charged with aggravated assault intentionally causing harm and five counts of unlawful threats.

She has been refused police bail and is expected to appear in the Adelaide Youth Court on Thursday.

South Australian police's Chief Inspector Matt Mann said the alleged incident was not a random attack.

"The students are known to each other through the school... this was not a random attack, it was student on student," he told reporters, following the incident.

"The school acted admirably in locking it down and making sure the victim was adequately treated."

Principal Jillian Havey said counselling would be provided to students and staff.

"Please be assured that this is an isolated incident," she said.

"At St Dominic's Priory College the care and wellbeing of our students is our paramount concern."

Wednesday's incident is the second stabbing at a South Australian school in little more than a week.

On July 24, an 18-year-old student was alleged to have stabbed a 17-year-old girl in the back at Renmark High School.
