Girl, 4, saves families in Melbourne fire

A mother has suffered burns to her back as she and seven others fled a burning house in Melbourne.

A four-year-old girl has woken her mother and helped two families flee a potentially deadly house fire in Melbourne.

The MFB says the families, comprising two adults and six children, evacuated the Broadmeadows home on Friday morning after the girl heard the smoke alarm and woke her mother.

The house was destroyed by the blaze which was brought under control by 8am.

A 22-year-old woman was treated at the scene after suffering burns to her back and smoke inhalation.

"The cause of the fire was unattended clothes placed on a heater to dry," the MFB said in a statement.
