Girl missing in NT after creek crossing

An air and land search is under way for a teenage girl who was last seen attempting to cross a flooded creek in the Northern Territory.

A teenage girl is missing after attempting to cross a flooded creek in a remote Northern Territory community.

An air and land search is under way to find the 14-year-old, who hasn't been seen since 9pm on Saturday.

She was trying to swim across Wattie Creek, between a crossing and the Daguragu community, with two other girls but failed to make it to the other side.

"The alert was raised after two girls made it across to Daguragu and were able to notify family and police," Superintendent Kylie Proctor said.

Police and community members began searching the Kalkarindji area, but were unable to find the missing girl.

A larger search involving police, Northern Territory Emergency Service community members, two helicopters and a quad bike began at first light on Sunday.

More resources are expected to be deployed to the search area.

Supt Proctor said the incident was a stark reminder for all people to exercise extreme caution when crossing flooded creeks.
