Give states housing power: issues paper

Giving the states full responsibility for housing assistance and homelessness services is an idea in a draft discussion paper on federation reform.

States and territories would take up full responsibility for funding and delivering housing assistance and homelessness services, under an option being considered by governments.

The idea is one of three put forward in a draft discussion paper on federation reform, released by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet on Tuesday.

It says the move could "deliver better services", but the plan would have to be carefully managed and transitioned over time.
