Glaetzer into QFs at track cycling worlds

In-form Matthew Glaetzer is through to the final eight in the individual sprint at the track cycling worlds but some fellow Aussies are out of the running.

In-form Australian sprinter Matthew Glaetzer has progressed to the quarter-finals in the individual sprint at the track cycling world championships in Paris.

Glaetzer qualified fifth fastest with a flying 200m time of 9.703secs and got past German powerhouse Robert Forstemann in the 1/16 finals.

The 2012 team sprint world champion then overcame New Zealand's Sam Webster on Saturday night (Sunday morning AEDT) to make it through to the final eight where he'll meet Dutch rider Jeffrey Hoogland.

Glaetzer, 22, posted the fastest-ever flying 200m on Australian soil in late January at the national championships in Melbourne.

The South Australian also boasts two of the three fastest flying 200m times in history including the national record of 9.459secs set at altitude in Mexico in late 2013.

Compatriot Peter Lewis, in his debut world championships ride, qualified 14th with a flying 200m of 9.830secs.

The 25-year-old beat Czech rider Pavel Kelemen to progress to the 1/8 finals but then hit a roadblock in the form of France's multiple-world champion Gregory Bauge.

Lewis had another chance to progress via the repechage but was outclassed by New Zealand's Sam Webster.

Earlier on Saturday, Jacob Schmid rode an impressive 9.777secs to qualify eighth fastest but was then knocked out of the competition by Webster in the 1/16 finals.
