Liberal National Party candidate Bill Glasson has conceded defeat to Labor's Terri Butler in the by-election for Kevin Rudd's Brisbane seat of Griffith.
Dr Glasson, a former Australian Medical Association president, says he's failed to win the south Brisbane seat for a second time after Saturday's by-election.
"I congratulate Ms Butler on her victory, and wish her well as she takes on the responsibility of representing the people of Griffith in federal parliament," Dr Glasson said in a statement on Tuesday.
"I would also like to thank my community for their patience and all their support during last year's general election and the by-election."
"I have now returned to my medical practice and will continue working with disadvantaged people in remote Queensland and overseas."
Ms Butler congratulated Dr Glasson on a hard-fought campaign.
"It was always a pleasure to deal with him when we met on the hustings," she said in a statement on Tuesday.
"I'm sure his family will be looking forward to some quality time with him, and I wish him and his family well."
Ms Butler also said it would be a privilege to represent Griffith in federal parliament.
"I am incredibly humbled by the trust and faith the people of Griffith have put in me," she said.
"It is now time for me to get down to business being a strong voice for Brisbane's south side."
At 3.30pm (AEST) on Tuesday, Ms Butler held a lead of 51.69 per cent on a two-party preferred basis, with a swing of 1.32 per cent to Dr Glasson.
Latest Australian Electoral Commission data shows a swing on the primary vote against the Labor party of 1.72 per cent and a swing to the LNP of 2.2 per cent, with Dr Glasson taking 44.5 per cent before preferences were dished out.
Premier Campbell Newman says it shows the campaign of negativity of negativity isn't working.
"Australians, Queenslanders have had enough of smear," he told parliament.
"They want plans, positivity energy and people that will take this state and this nation forward."
Mr Rudd twice took to Twitter to congratulate Ms Butler on her win.
"Very proud to pass the baton to @terrimbutler who will take fantastic care of our wonderful community. K," Mr Rudd wrote.
"I've received so much support from the good burghers of Griffith over the years, hope Terri does too. K."
