Glaxo says China executives broke the law

Four Glaxo employees have been detained by Chinese police on suspicion of bribing doctors and hospital administrators to prescribe its drugs.

An unidentified doctor said that "everyone from hospital administrators to doctors receive kickbacks when a drug is prescribed."

Another surgeon said the system kept many working in the profession afloat.

"My monthly salary is [equivalent to] 400 pounds. Without taking bribes, I couldn't survive," he said.

China's new leaders have promised to crackdown on corruption and it could have far-reaching consequences.
