He's used to playing in teams and now former Palmer United Party senator Glenn Lazarus is trying to set up his own.

The rugby league great turned Queensland senator has lodged paperwork with the Australian Electoral Commission to establish the Glenn Lazarus Team political party.

Senator Lazarus, who cut ties with Clive Palmer in March, already has a website for the team, with the tag line: "Doing the hard yards for Queensland".

Senator Lazarus says he's "really excited" about setting up his new team, telling reporters in Canberra he wants to do the best job he can.

The independent doesn't have anybody in mind to join him yet, but says he'll start calling for members once the procedural steps are cleared.

"Hopefully people will want to be a part of the Glenn Lazarus team."
