Global economic agency's advice to Aust

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has encouraged Australia to maintain discipline in managing its budget going forward in a new report.

OECD REPORT ON AUSTRALIA

ECONOMY

* Gradually lift the official interest rate, in the absence of a downturn.

* Prepare for the possibility of a significant correction in the housing market.

* Ensure fiscal balances remain on track to reach surplus.

* Further shift the tax mix from direct taxes (corporate and personal tax) and inefficient taxes (including real-estate stamp duty) to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and land taxes.

ENVIRONMENT

* Stabilise and strengthen climate change policy.

* Put a greater focus on biodiversity, when considering projects for approval and land use.

INFRASTRUCTURE

* Strengthen the governance of urban areas, including through greater leadership at the federal and state level in planning.

* Match ramped up road investment with better road charging, including charges based on distance travelled and urban congestion.

SOCIAL

* Give indigenous communities a bigger role in policy design and implementation.

* Continue to focus on disadvantaged students in early childhood education and schools.

* Incentivise job active providers to keep workers for longer and improve the quality of training and on-the-job support.
