Globemaster conducts Antarctic flights

A RAAF Globemaster aircraft has delivered more than 100 tonnes of heavy equipment to Antarctica during five test trips.

An RAAF Globemaster aircraft has completed five test trips to east Antarctica delivering more than 100 tonnes of heavy machinery and cargo.

Australian Antarctic Division director Nick Gales said the C-17A aircraft was able to take a 23-tonne tractor to Hobart for repairs with a two month turnaround compared to a two year journey by ship.

The aircraft also did an air drop of four heliboxes from 500 feet and simulated an emergency medical evacuation.
