Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate will have surgery to remove potentially dangerous polyps from his bowel.

Mr Tate said on Tuesday the polyps were discovered during a colonoscopy following a routine health check this week.

It was recommended he undergo surgery to remove them this month.

"The surgeon's comment was if I'd left it for 12 months it would have been life-threatening," he said.

Mr Tate's wife Ruth had a major health scare earlier this year when she collapsed and went into cardiac arrest in Singapore.

Mr Tate helped save her life by giving CPR for 20 minutes until medical help arrived.
