Swimming action has commenced at the Commonwealth Games with two Australians qualifying for Monday night's women's 200 metre freestyle final.

In the first heats held at Delhi's new aquatic centre on Monday morning, Australians Kylie Palmer (1:58.71) and national champion Blair Evans (1:59.25) qualified first and second fastest for the final.

But the pair will face a strong challenge from English stars Rebecca Adlington (1:59.68) and Jo Jackson (1:59.33), who also went through.

Eight medals up for grabs

Eight gold medals are up for grabs as the Commonwealth Games in Delhi bursts into life on day one of competition.

Australia's swimming stars will chase five of those medals with bad boy Nick D'arcy hoping to turn from villain to hero by claiming gold.

Ryan Napoleon will compete in the men's 400m freestyle while Eamon Sullivan spearheads Australia's charge in the freestyle relay.

Gold medals will also be decided Monday in weightlifting in the women's 48kg category and the men's 56kg section, while Australia's male gymnasts are aiming for the nation's first Commonwealth Games gold medal in that discipline.

Competition starts in 11 of the 17 sports with our netballers beginning their campaign against Samoa.
