Golf course mooted for Kangaroo Island

The SA government has proposed a Kangaroo Island tourism development package, including a $30 million golf course, if it is re-elected.

A Commissioner for Kangaroo Island and a $30 million golf course designed by Greg Norman are part of a package proposed by the South Australian government if re-elected in March.

Describing the island as a jewel in the crown for SA, Planning Minister John Rau said it needed greater protection and a strong advocate to cut through red tape and represent it.

"It will be a statutory appointment and will report to Cabinet regarding the coordination and implementation of current and future projects for the island," he said on Wednesday.

The minister has granted major project status to a new 18-hole championship golf course and associated infrastructure - including a desalination plant and helipad - and a clubhouse, tourist accommodation and residential development.

About 50 jobs would be created through the golf course, which would aim to make it into the top 100 courses in the world.

A $5 million five-day walking trail also will be developed, encompassing the spectacular scenery within the parks of south west KI, Mr Rau said.

A re-elected government also would contribute $3.5 million to upgrade the island's airport, to enable direct flights from the nation's capital cities.

A further $13.5 million would be sought from the federal government for the upgrade.
