The architect of the Gillard government's school funding reforms, David Gonski, has been appointed as the next chairman of ANZ.

Mr Gonski will join the ANZ board in February 2014 and replace current chair John Morschel in May.

As a result of the appointment, he will step down from his current role as chairman of the federal government's Future Fund in January.

"I intend to step down as Chairman of the Guardians of the Future Fund during January 2014 so as to avoid any possible conflict of interest with my new position and allowing sufficient time for a smooth transition and handover to my successor," he said in a statement.

But he will continue on in other roles including chairman of Coca-Cola Amatil, Director of Singapore Telecommunications and Chancellor of the University of New South Wales.

Mr Morschel said Mr Gonski's business experience in Australia and Asia and involvement with the education, government and community sectors meant he would be a significant asset to ANZ.

"David is one of Australia's most respected business leaders and company directors," he said.

"He knows ANZ well having previously served as a director from 2002 to 2007, and it is particularly pleasing to have someone of his calibre join the board and to succeed me."

Mr Gonski said it was a privilege to be taking up the position.

"The bank is in a strong position and I am looking forward to working with shareholders, with my fellow directors, and with (CEO) Mike Smith and his management team to continue to realise ANZ's super regional strategy."
