Tech giant Google is undergoing a major restructure and will now exist under a new parent company called Alphabet.

Google management says Alphabet will operate as a collection of companies, the largest of which is Google itself.

The main Google businesses will include search, ads, maps, apps, YouTube and Android.

Non-Google businesses will include Google Ventures and Google X, its research and development arm.

"Fundamentally, we believe this allows us more management scale, as we can run things independently that aren’t very related," says Google CEO Larry Page, adding that each company will have its own chief executive.

Mr Page says the name Alphabet was chosen because it "means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity's most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search!"
