Google makes Glass available to US

Anybody in the US can now get their hands on Google's Glass gadget - provided it's in stock.

Google has opened up sales of its head-mounted Glass gadget to all US residents ahead of its official consumer release.

Anybody living in the US can now order an "explorer" version of Glass online for $US1500, Google says in a post on its Google Plus social network.

The post says Google is still working on improving the device's hardware and software ahead of a wider consumer release, the date of which has not been announced.

It cautioned that stock would likely be limited.

"Our hope is to bring Glass to new Explorers, like optometrists, sports lovers, online retailers, cooks and travellers," Google said in a related post last week.

The release of Glass - an internet-connected headset containing a small translucent screen that hovers above the right eye - has been slow and staggered.

A handful of hand-picked "explorers" consisting largely of software developers were the first to get their hands on the gadget, their feedback being used to fine-tune the device.

Google then invited a finite number of these explorers' friends to try out the devices.

In April, Google quickly ran out of stock during a one-day-only sale in the US.

A handful of devices have found their way to Australia, where local developers and larger companies such as Telstra have been working on software.

But there's still no indication of when the gadget will be available to Australian consumers.
