Paul Gallen says ongoing criticism of him from Phil Gould has become personal.

Gould repeatedly criticised Gallen during NSW's losing State of Origin series this year, saying the Blues skipper wasn't needed by coach Laurie Daley and his team.

The former NSW, Penrith and Sydney Roosters coach and now Channel Nine commentator also questioned Gallen's efforts during the Sharks' loss to Manly last week, inferring the Cronulla skipper cost his side victory because he 'hogged' the ball.

Before the Sharks' sudden-death final with South Sydney on Sunday, Gallen told Triple M he felt there was a problem between him and Gould.

"I think it's pretty clear to say there's an issue there. It's personal," Gallen said.

"Before the State of Origin side was picked, he said he wouldn't even have me in the side.

"I wouldn't say I'm offended but it does disappoint me. 'Gus' played the game and is involved in the game so knows how hard it is.

"He knows the pressures high-profile players are put under, particularly captains."

Gallen said he had only crossed paths with Gould once at a charity event a few years ago.

Asked what he would say to him if they met again, Gallen said: "Is there anything personal? Have I ever done anything to Gus?". However, Gallen said the issue wasn't giving him any sleepless nights.

"Gus isn't my coach. Flanno is my coach and he's never had any issue with the way I play."
