Government's eyes on frequent flyer points

The Australian government, which relies on air travel for 150 agencies and 100,000 travellers, is looking to receive the pool of its frequent flyer points.

Its members spend lots of time crisscrossing the country and now the Australian government is looking to get its hands on frequent flyer points.

The idea is contained within a draft discussion paper as part of an upcoming tender for air travel spending, which expires next April.

Travellers now can't accrue points when they're on official business, but are able to gain status credits that allow them perks such as lounge access.

"Organisations are invited to provide information about ... any opportunities, current or emerging technologies and systems that are available to enable loyalty reward points to accrue and be used at a government department/agency level," the paper says.

The government also hopes to have access to fixed price deals and flexible fares, which would include last-seat availability and bigger baggage allowances.

The whole-of-Australian-government air travel contract began in June 2010.

The Finance Department intends to approach the industry soon to establish a new airline panel, which it hopes will be in place for about 11 years.

It wants to receive feedback by Monday July 20.

During 2013-14 the government spent $377 million on air travel, covering 150 agencies and 100,000 travellers.

Top domestic travel routes include Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Canberra, with Port Moresby to Manus Island, and Perth to Christmas Island among top international routes.
