Governor-General Peter Cosgrove has expressed Australia's condolences over the deadly terror attacks in Paris.

Sir Peter said Australians are greatly saddened by the senseless loss of life.

"On behalf of all Australians, I wish to express to the French Government and people our deepest condolences and sympathies in the aftermath of the shocking attacks which have rocked France," he said in a statement.

"We were appalled at the loss of so many innocent lives in the French capital."

Sir Peter said the two nations had a long history of standing together in times of crisis.

"And we do so again today as we condemn, in the strongest possible terms, those who seek to interrupt our peaceful way of life," he said.
