Governor-General visits overseas troops

Governor-General Peter Cosgrove has visited troops ahead of representing Australia in France to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Governor-General Peter Cosgrove joined Australian troops in Iraq to watch the Melbourne Cup.

In the lead-up to the centenary of the end of WWI, Sir Peter has been visiting Australian Defence Force members in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For the famous horse race, Sir Peter presented the winner of the sweep with a replica trophy.

He said it was vital to to recognise defence force members ahead of Remembrance Day on Sunday.

"As we approach the centenary of the end of the First World War, we reflect on the sacrifice of so many Australians in that conflict and, in remembering, pay tribute to and show our ongoing respect for the men and women who serve today in the ADF," Sir Peter said.

Sir Peter and Lady Cosgrove will represent Australia at events this weekend, including a service at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
