Govt appoints team to advise on trade

The federal government has appointed an advisory council to assist in its trade and investment agenda.

The Abbott government has put together a 20-strong advisory team to assist in its trade and investment agenda.

The Trade and Investment Policy Advisory Council draws expertise from a wide range of industries, including resources and energy, food and agribusiness, banking and finance, international education and tourism.

"This group brings considerable horsepower to the table as well as a unique and high quality commercial perspective to the task of advancing trade and investment," Trade Minister Andrew Robb said in a statement on Friday.

Expertise on trade and investment with North Asia will include advice from Mitsui Australia chairman and managing director Yasushi Takahashi.

Cargill Australia managing director Philippa Purser and Coca Cola-Amatil group managing director Alison Watkins are among those providing advice on food and agribusiness, while Crown Ltd CEO Rowan Craigie is on the council for his expert knowledge in entertainment and tourism.

Universities Australia chair Professor Sandra Harding has been appointed to assist in international education advice.

The council will meet for the first time on June 6 in Canberra.
