Govt clearing path for pension changes

The government has split off minor measures from its pension legislation, but expects the Senate to consider the key plan of tighter assets tests next week.

The federal government is preparing a smooth passage for its pension changes that will affect tens of thousands of retirees.

It has split off minor measures, including abolishing the seniors supplement, from draft laws imposing a tighter assets test.

But the key plan remains - to save $2.4 billion by reducing payments for 235,756 seniors, cutting 91,378 people from the part-pension and giving 171,658 retirees more money.

That will be considered by the Senate next week, where it's expected to pass with the support of the Australian Greens.

Meanwhile, an inquiry into the government's planned age pension changes will report back earlier than expected.

An upper house committee report on legislation will be tabled on Monday instead of in August as previously planned.
