The high-speed communications network linking federal government departments and agencies could be sold.

The Intra Government Communications Network was earmarked in the mid-year budget review for a scoping study before a possible sale.

ICON comprises 150,000km of fibre linking 88 agencies at 400 sites around the ACT.

It's estimated the network is capable of carrying up to two terabits a second over its pathways.

The network also distributes parliamentary television to agencies and carries the voice traffic for the Government Administrative Voice Network, which provides free local phone calls between agencies.

ICON began in 1991 as a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade project involving teletype machines.

The sale of ICON has been identified as part of the push to streamline services and cut the cost of government administration.
