Govt depts face off on social media

The federal government is keeping track of how Facebook and Twitter users engage with departments, agencies and public campaigns.

Federal bureaucrats just want to be liked. On Facebook, that is.

The Department of Finance has begun tracking which government departments, agencies and campaigns attract the most Facebook "likes" and the most Twitter followers.

The most recent data posted last week showed the number one government Facebook page was Australia.com, with almost 5.6 million "likes".

The rest of the top five were: the Australian Army (216,476), the ABC (214,205), the Be the Influence: Tackling Binge Drinking campaign (189,714) and the Australian Embassy in Jakarta (173,968).

The least popular in the list of 124 government-related Facebook pages was the Treasury Graduates Program, with 192 likes.

As of last week, the dominant Twitter feed was @Australia (109,482 followers), followed by @TourismAus (34,652), @CSIROnews (25,037), @dfat (24,822) and @AMSA_News (24,793).

The least popular was @DEEWRgrads (64) - a Twitter feed with information about the 2014 graduate program for the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

The data is being collected by the Cross Agency Social Media Forum - a group of social media users across the public service.
