Govt moves to counter online extremism

The Attorney-General says the government is seeking to counter online radicalisation to stop Australians from fighting in Syria and Iraq.

The federal government is taking steps to reduce access to extremist material online.

Attorney-General George Brandis told parliament on Wednesday that every day the Islamic State organisation created upwards of 100,000 pieces of online propaganda on Twitter alone.

The government will spend $22 million to establish a social media monitoring and analysis capability to reduce the support extremist groups can garner through the internet, he said.
