Govt says carbon repeal, debt bills urgent

The carbon tax repeal bills and laws to raise the debt ceiling to $500 billion will be introduced to federal parliament this week.

The coalition party room has been told the federal government wants its carbon tax legislation and other laws to raise the debt ceiling passed by parliament this week.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Wednesday will introduce 10 bills to unwind Labor's carbon pricing scheme and associated agencies.

On the same day, Treasurer Joe Hockey will introduce a bill to raise the national debt ceiling to $500 billion, from $300 billion.

The first meeting of Liberal and National MPs since the September election was told the legislation was urgent and the government wanted it through both houses of parliament by the end of this week.

Other priority legislation, which may also be introduced this week, includes the minerals resource rent tax repeal bill and legislation to reinstate the Australian Building and Construction Commission.

Mr Abbott told the joint party room meeting that MPs needed to be as disciplined in government as they were in opposition.

He said the government's focus this week would be on the carbon tax and the only person who did not support its repeal was "Electricity Bill" Shorten.

Deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop said it would be a "predictable but inspiring government".

Liberal federal director Brian Loughnane gave a briefing, saying voters' main concerns were for a strong and prosperous economy and a secure Australia.

He said the abolition of the carbon tax was not just for the sake of it, but to help Australians to get ahead.
