Govt targets proceeds of crime

Crooks beware - the government plans to seize your ill-gotten earnings and use it to fight crime.

That will include more closed circuit television cameras and better lighting.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan says Labor halted distribution of funds from the Confiscated Assets Account and used it to prop up the budget.

The coalition plans to reverse that decision and make funds available for local crime prevention projects, including the Safer Streets Program, and expansion of the National Anti-Gangs Squad to Western Australia.

The government will provide $50 million to the Safer Streets Program, providing grants for installation of security infrastructure including CCTV systems, lighting and for community initiatives in high-crime areas.
