Govt to release report on competition

The final report of the biggest review of competition policy in two decades will be handed down by government minister Bruce Billson.

As the Abbott government's debate over taxation begins, so its review of competition policy will end with the release of a report.

Competition Minister Bruce Billson will release the final Harper report on Tuesday in Melbourne.

Professor Ian Harper's interim report in September of the biggest review of competition policy in two decades indicated cheaper books and coffee, medicines available at supermarkets and longer shopping hours could be on the cards.

The report also called for an overhaul of taxi regulation to create greater competition and cheaper costs to consumers.

Treasurer Joe Hockey released a much-anticipated discussion paper on Australia's complex tax system on Monday.
