GPS trackers to cut car theft in Perth

Free GPS trackers will be made available to Perth car owners in an attempt to crack down on motor vehicle theft in the WA capital.

Perth drivers most likely to have their car stolen will be approached to have free GPS trackers installed in their vehicles, in a move to crack down on thieves.

The world-first scheme is a "game changer" in law enforcement, Police Minister Liza Harvey said.

One thousand free GPS devices will be installed by the RAC in a bid to shake Western Australia's reputation as the car theft capital of Australia.

Recent figures show one car is stolen every hour in WA.

National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council spokesman Ray Carroll said while WA had the most secure fleet nationally, with nine in every 10 cars protected by an immobiliser, thieves were breaking into homes to steal the keys of late model vehicles.

Ms Harvey said in the past five years, 27 per cent of all motor vehicle thefts in WA were the result of a home burglary.

The minister said trackers will be issued to motorists who drive car makes and models that are most commonly stolen.

But that information will not be disclosed publicly because of the nature of the trial.

The car owner will use their smart phone to set an electronic fence around the vehicle, which will trigger an alert if it is driven away.

Police will also be able to track the stolen vehicle in real time.
