Energy company AGL has appointed non-executive director Graeme Hunt to take over as chairman when Jerry Maycock retires.

Mr Hunt, who joined the company in September 2012, has extensive experience as former managing director of Broadspectrum, previously known as Transfield Services, and Lihir Gold, AGL said in a statement on Wednesday.

He also has served as president of BHP's Iron Ore, Aluminium and Uranium divisions.

Mr Maycock, who retires at AGL's annual general meeting in September after seven years as chairman and 11 years on the board, said Mr Hunt was chosen for his calibre and experience over several strong candidates.

"Graeme's tenure on the AGL board means he already has a deep understanding of our strategic imperative in relation to prospering in a carbon-constrained future," Mr Maycock said.

"His appointment will support continuity of strategy for AGL at a time of transformation in the energy sector."

Mr Hunt said he was honoured and excited to work closely with AGL's executive team to deliver value for customers and shareholders.
