Graham Reid has quit as Australian men's hockey coach following the Kookaburras' disappointing Rio Olympics campaign.

The 52-year-old stepped away two months after his world No.1 team had been eliminated from medal contention with a 4-0 loss to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

Reid was under pressure after his team struggled in Rio, suffering group-stage losses to Spain and Belgium in the lead-up to their exit despite gold-medal favouritism.

After the Olympics, Reid had declared he had "unfinished business" with the team, but he has decided not to seek a contract renewal and will step away immediately.

Assistant coach Paul Gaudoin will step in as interim head coach for next month's trans-Tasman series in New Zealand and the International Festival of Hockey.

With victories in this year's Champions Trophy and last year's Oceania Cup under Reid's guidance, the Kookaburras maintained their world No.1 ranking during his two years in charge.
